Premium Double Hinged Doors & Timber French Doors

Custom french doors in hardwood timber for your Melbourne property

Classic double hinged doors, also known as french doors, are a simple, timeless and cost-effective solution for creating a smooth transition between interior and exterior settings. Aspect Windows customises wooden double hinged doors and timber french doors with either solid or glass panels to suit your living spaces and design preferences.

What are double hinged doors?

Standard hinged doors in Australian homes and commercial properties have a single door panel fastened to the left or right side of the door frame, allowing the door to swing either inwards or outwards. Double hinged doors, also called french doors, have two panels, one on either side of the frame. They open outwards from the middle and are suitable for larger spaces.

How are hinged doors and swing doors different?

Hinged and swing doors have different ranges of movement for different purposes. Hinged doors only move in one direction, while swing doors operate in both—ideal for high-traffic areas like restaurant kitchens.

Benefits of timber double hinged doors

Cost-effective, durable and easy to install, our double hinged doors are generally used to connect the indoors to the outdoors.

Simplicity and longevity

Depending on panel size, wooden hinged doors are fixed to the door frame using two or three hinges. The hinges allow uniform operation, making them less prone to mechanical issues.

Versatile uses

Timber hinged doors are generally installed on entryways, patios, balconies and laundries. When open, they provide wide, unobstructed openings that can connect living spaces for entertaining or improve ventilation. When closed, they provide excellent soundproofing compared to other designs.

Affordable solutions

The simple design of timber hinged doors requires less hardware than other styles, such as sliding doors, making them more economical. When properly sealed, hinged doors enhance insulation, lowering energy costs.

What is the difference between hinged doors and french doors?

Standard hinged doors generally have a single solid panel attached to a frame using hinges, while double hinged or french doors have a double panel with glass panes, often used for larger openings. French doors let in more natural light and make an area more spacious when both panels are open. While french doors are always hinged doors, not all hinged doors are french doors.

Why choose timber french doors for your Melbourne property

Timber french doors are stylish and can improve your home’s overall energy efficiency , making them an excellent choice for Melbourne properties. With a chic aesthetic and impressive thermal properties, they offer practical benefits and energy cost savings when manufactured and installed correctly.

Visual appeal

Large glass panels enhance the elegant appearance of timber french doors, offering views to the outdoors and letting natural light in for a more open, airy feel.

Energy efficiency

The natural insulating properties of timber, coupled with single or double-glazed glass panels, mean less reliance on heating and cooling. Opening your timber french doors improves ventilation and helps retain heat when closed.

How do I select the right timber for my french doors?

Our premium-quality timber varietals are perfect for timber french doors—they are attractive and enhance insulation for your home. Some species are also bushfire resistant and comply with energy rating requirements.

Choose from various timber species

Aspect Windows sources hardwood timber species known for their durability and strength. Options include Victorian Ash, American Oak, Tasmanian Oak, Blackbutt, Flooded Gum and Accoya in paint grade and stain grade. Standard grade and select grade Blackbutt are available by special request.

Indoor versus outdoor timber options

Tasmanian Oak doors and Victorian Ash doors are ideal for interior use, with a fine grain and pale tones that add warmth and elegance. American Oak doors suit indoor spaces and can also withstand outdoor exposure if properly finished and treated.

Blackbutt doors and Red Grandis doors are desirable choices for outdoor use due to their strength and weather resistance. Accoya doors perform well in extreme weather conditions and resist decay, weathering and warping. Talk to us about your project, and we will recommend the most suitable timber for your doors and windows.

Why french doors suit different architectural styles

Timber french doors complement a variety of architectural styles. Selecting the right timber type will accentuate the features of your home.

Contemporary home design

Accoya doors suit modern homes with their uniform finish and minimalist colours. The reddish-brown hue of Red Grandis doors adds warmth, while the fine grain of Victorian Ash doors is suitable for painted finishes.

Rural and coastal properties

Blackbutt timber’s grain and fire-resistant properties make it appealing for homes in natural settings or bushfire-prone areas. Tasmanian Oak doors and American Oak doors add warmth with their fine-grain appearance.

Classic charm

Install Victorian Ash doors and Red Grandis doors in Colonial-style homes for a classic look. Blackbutt doors add a timeless aesthetic, especially when paired with traditional design elements like decorative moulding.

Customisations and upgrades

Our timber french doors are manufactured with solid or glass panels and tailored to suit your needs. Choose from our customisation options for the perfect blend of durability and design.

French door sizes

Standard doors range from 2100 to 2400 mm in height, however Aspect Windows manufactures custom french doors up to 3000 mm upon request. Panel thickness varies from 33 to 45 mm, depending on use and glass requirements.
Our warranty does not cover warping for panels over 2340 mm high.

Combination units

Combining french doors with other door and window types is a versatile and practical option that enhances the transition from indoors to outdoors. Combination units can include a fixed window beside or above french doors, ideal for increasing light to give a brighter, more luxurious feel.

Glass configurations

Choose from our range of glass options for your custom french doors to reduce noise, improve energy efficiency and increase privacy in your home.

Glazing options

While single glazing is available, double glazing improves insulation and noise reduction. Alternatively, opt for frosted glass to increase privacy, apply glazing bars—thin strips that divide the glass into sections, creating a grid pattern—or Colonial barred glazing for a distinctive and traditional look.

Bevelled glass

With its textured, elegant appearance and angled edges, bevelled glass adds visual interest and refracted prisms of light.

Door panel treatments

Our hardwood double hinged doors and french doors can be further enhanced to suit your spaces with the following options:

Decorative moulding

Add a touch of elegance to your timber door panels with decorative moulding to suit a wide range of architectural styles and decor.

Bottom railing

Large bottom rails for added support will improve the stability and design features of your wooden hinged doors.

Light-reflecting paint

Apply a high-sheen, light-coloured gloss finish to boost brightness and reduce warping caused by light reflection.

Component details

Increase the functionality and visual appeal of your custom french doors with high-quality finishes for hinges and other fixtures. We provide our timber door frames and doors as individual components, with hinges and locksets supplied and fitted by the builder onsite. Some options to consider include:

Aesthetics

Create a classic look with polished brass, or select satin brass for a softer appearance. Oil-rubbed and antique bronze promote a rustic feel, and matte black, stainless steel and nickel plating provide a sleek, modern look.

Durability

Suitable for outdoor areas, stainless steel and oil-rubbed bronze resist rust and corrosion. Matte black and satin brass reduces fingerprints and smudges for a cleaner look.
